FAQs
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Can anyone have a treatment?
From 1 minute to 100 years old! Anyone can be treated. If you suffer from a specific medical condition, please ensure that you check your chosen therapy's description to find out if it is advisable for you. It's also a good idea to ask your GP for their advice.
Is it possible to have a treatment if you are in a wheelchair or physically disabled?
Absolutely! Many treatments can be performed from a seated position. There are adequate disabled access and amenities in my west end clinic, Napier’s the Herbalists. If you prefer to have a carer on hand to help you, this is no problem, just let me know prior to your booking and i can make arrangements for you.
Is it okay to have a treatment when you are pregnant?
There is alot of conjecture regarding the effects of alternative therapies on women in the early stages of pregnancy. It is my belief that the treatments i perform cannot cause any harm, however in the interests of complete safety to you and your baby, it is best to wait until you are at least three months into the pregnancy. In regards to aromatherapy oils, there are still some that can be used safely. I will discuss this with you before your treatment.
Should i consult my doctor before getting a treatment?
If you are currently undergoing treatment from your GP, it is important to confer with them to ensure that it will not affect the treatment they are giving you. If your GP wishes to find out more information on your chosen treatment, feel free to pass on the contact details stated on the 'Contact' page.
Should i eat before a treatment or should i wait till afterwards?
It's important to make sure that you have eaten at least 20-30 minutes before a treatment, as many treatments (especially massage) increase your circulation and stimulate digestive functions. If you have had nothing to eat, you may feel slightly nauseous during the treatment.
Will the treatment affect my medication?
Certain kinds of treatment can affect some medications such as antibiotics, insulin and in some cases IUDs. If you are on any on-going or long term medication, it is advisable to check with your doctor first, in case your medication needs to be adjusted.
Can i try a taster of a therapy to see if i like it first?
Several of my treatments are available in 10 or 20 minute taster sessions. If you would like to book a taster, simply state which taster you are looking for and it's duration. Check out the 'Taster' section for more information.
How will i know if the treatments are working?
As part of the initial consultation process, i note down symptoms and observations i have made and review them each session. In this way, we can chart your progress.
Why do you have to drink water afterwards?
As we all know, water makes up 65% of the body so it's important to keep those levels up. When you receive most therapies, there is an increase to your circulation and improvement in your bodily functions. Some people experience slight light-headedness, a need to visit the bathroom afterwards or notice increase in perspiration. By making sure that you drink some water after your treatment, you will ensure that you do not feel dehydrated or hot and it helps to bring you back down to earth if you feel like floating away afterwards.
How much do the treatments cost?
There's a full listing of costs and duration available on the 'Prices' page.
Where can i park nearby?
There are maps of each clinic's surrounding areas to help you find parking facilites on the 'Where you can find me' page.
Do you do home visits or parties?
If you would like a home visit, please contact me on my direct line 07821428269. When i am in clinic my phone will be off, however i will get back to you as soon as possible if you leave a voicemail message. For information on parties please check out the 'Massage party' page.
BOOKING YOUR TREATMENT
Do you offer Student/OAP/Low income discounts?
A discount of 10% is available to students and OAP's upon request. If you are on a low income there is a budget clinic every Monday morning at Neal's Yard Remedies.
Do you offer a discount on block bookings?
Yes, if you are interested in block booking your treatments, let me know and i can tailor a quote for you.
Do i have to book well in advance?
Advanced booking is not always necessary. The best thing to do is to call the clinic you wish to attend and check availability. I do not have constant access to the appointment diary for each clinic, but my receptionists will be able to advise you on my availability.
How do i book an appointment?
A treatment in one of my clinics can be booked through the shop reception, in person or by phone.
What happens if i need to cancel an appointment?
If you are unable to attend your treatment, please let me know as soon as possible. Due to clinic policy, if you cancel less than 24 hours before your appointment, you will incur a charge of £10.
MASSAGE QUESTIONS
Do i have to lie down?
Massage is really flexible in approach so it can be done in a seated position or lying on your side. So if lying on your back is painful or uncomfortable for you, please let me know and we can adjust your position without any difficulty. It's important that you feel comfortable.
Do you always use oil?
Generally oil is used in most forms of massage as it helps to lubricate the skin and aid the movements to feel relaxing and comfortable. In aromatherapy, essential oils are added to an existing 'base' oil, to tailor for your specific requirements. On-site massage, on the other hand, is generally done with your clothes on.
Will the treatment leave me oily or sticky afterwards?
I try to ensure that an appropriate volume of oil is used during each treatment, so that you don't have trouble getting your clothes back on. I use pure base and essential oils so you should never feel sticky afterwards. If you are having aromatherapy, the facial involved in the treatment will get some oil in your hair, so if this is a problem, just let me know and i will try to avoid doing so.
SPORTS MASSAGE QUESTIONS
Should i wait until my injury has healed?
Not necessarily. Sports massage can aid in the recovery from injury by helping to encourage circulation and lymphatic movement. This helps an injury heal at a quicker speed and reduces pro-longed swelling and muscular scarring in the area. Injuries that should not be treated can be found on the Sports Massage description page.
REFLEXOLOGY QUESTIONS
Should i wash my feet before treatment?
It's not always possible for people to wash their feet beforehand so don't worry about this. I generally cleanse feet with anti-bacterial wipes before beginning the session, so there's no need to feel self-conscious.
Is it true Reflexology can help encourage natural labour?
There is a lot of conjecture on this topic. I believe that Reflexology helps to prime the body and mind in preparation for labour and birth, however on it's own cannot induce labour. It does however relax you to such a level that you will be more mentally rested and ready for when the baby decides to come. Specialist 'Maternity' Reflexologists can stimulate certain points on your feet to encourage your body to be ready for labour. If you are looking for a Maternity Reflexologist in your area, feel free to contact me and i will find someone who can help you.
AROMATHERAPY QUESTIONS
Will the oils be left on, or can i wash them off?
Essential oils continue to work for up to 6 days after aromatherapy massage, so the oil won't be removed right away. It's advisable not to shower or bathe on the day or your massage, to allow them to enter your body through your skin. It's perfectly okay to bathe the day afterwards. If you wish to remove the oil from your hair at any point, make sure that you put the shampoo on your hair before any water, as this will make it easier to remove.
MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Is this similar to the detox spa treatments?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD, is very unique. It involves no detoxifying agents at all, unlike some spa treatments. The treatment is based simply upon the concept of encouraging the movement of your lymphatic fluid. In this manner you don't have to worry about having anything to wash off.
Where do toxins actually come out?
Toxins are encouraged back into you lymphatic transport system, which ensures that toxins are either released through your pores as respiration, urination, excretion etc. It's all natural.
